TIF Procedure helps people living with GERD

TIF stands for transoral incisionless
fundoplication. It’s a new technique that we have– that we use for the treatment of
GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. So, in the past, the surgical ways that we
would treat GERD would be with actual incisions. The gold standard for taking
care of reflux disease is to perform a Nissen fundoplication, which involves
making incisions on the abdomen, going in and repairing what needs to be repaired.
The incisionless fundoplication is a new technique that we use that does not
require the use of incisions to actually go in and fix the problem that needs to
be fixed. The process that we– that we employ is actually what we call
endoscopic. So the way we go about taking care of this is patients that have
reflux disease are generally they undergo what we call endoscopy, which
would be a scope that’s used, that’s passed into the mouth down, the esophagus,
into the stomach. And the TIF device that we use actually it goes over that
scope, so, it’s– it’s everything is done endoscopically, meaning inside of the
stomach, inside of the esophagus. So, recovery time is quicker. The patient
population that this is appropriate for would be patients that are– a variety of
reasons, but a lot of it is patients who are tired of taking medications on a
daily basis, patients who we could treat all aspects
of reflux disease but, but generally patients that are tired of taking
medications, that feel like they need to have something more aggressive done and
there were patients also that we can treat with this procedure that don’t
necessarily suffer from the symptoms of acid reflux. A lot of these patients have
been taking medications which reduce the acid, so a lot of the patients that we
take care of our patients that have problems with hoarseness, their voice has
changed, chronic cough and those are some of the patients that
we hope to take care of with this procedure. One of the reasons why we
might not be able to offer this procedure is in a patient that has a
large hiatal hernia, or if they have a particular type of hiatal hernia, then it
may not be the best option for them. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a
problem that– that I’ve been takin care of for years. As someone that actually suffers
from reflux disease, I’ve always looked into newer, innovative ways to take care
of this. I think patients in this area are very– very happy that we have a new a
new technique offer them and a new a new tool to fight reflux disease.
