Jan. 2010 Healthcare: Evaluation of the Patient Experiencing Chest Pain

>>Statistics reported in 2000 documented that
of 4.6 million emergency department visits for chest pain 1.68 million were admitted with acute coronary syndromes
or myocardial infarction. However, of that total there
were 11,000 patients sent home with a missed diagnosis of
myocardial infarction. Evaluation of a patient experiencing chest
pain can be frightening and difficult for many healthcare providers
including physicians. Nurses and other frontline healthcare
professionals are often the first providers a patient experiencing chest pain encounters. Prompt recognition of potentially
life threatening causes of chest pain by professionals can be life-saving as well
as prevent future long-term disability. As well prompt recognition of low
risk chest pain situations can assist in avoiding unnecessary diagnostic
testing and procedures.
