Albuterol Overview and Uses

Albuterol is a prescription medication used
to treat bronchospasm (narrowing of airways) and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Albuterol is in a class of medications called bronchodilators. It works by relaxing and
opening air passages to the lungs to make breathing easier. Albuterol comes as a regular
release tablet, an extended release tablet, and a syrup to take by mouth. Albuterol most
commonly comes in a solution to be inhaled either with a nebulizer or inhaler. This medication
may be taken once every 4 to 6 hours to prevent asthma or as a rescue medication during an
asthma attack. Common side effects include fast heartbeat, shakiness, and nervousness.
