L’Chaim to Israel

by Jonathan Friedman
In 60 short years, Israel has to put together a list of accomplishments worthy of a much older country, not the least of which is setting up a world-class wine industry in the heart of the Middle East. Israel’s wide variety of climates and her pool of dedicated and talented vineyard workers and […]

The Purim Pour

by Shoshana Filene
Liven up your Purim seuda and baskets with some vinuous treats. To keep things compact, consider half-bottles, which allow you to get more bang for your buck. Despite their bad rap, half-bottles are no longer relegated to cheap brands. In fact, there are many fine wines that come in mini-me bottles. These are […]

Best in Flow

by Shoshana Filene
Esteemed wine critic Robert Parker finally agreed to sample Israeli wines for the first time last month. Out of the 100 bottles he sampled, only 15 received more than a 90 point rating—a great accomplishment for a 28-year-old wine industry. Of these coveted vintages, only one is a dry […]

Bittersweet Bubbly

by Shoshana Filene
Like the name says, this sparkler is one part sweet, one part bitter culminating in one crisp, dry drink. In other words, it’s just the thing to kick off the New Year. Yarden Blanc de Blanc is a good choice for this cocktail. While not truly a champagne, it’s […]

Berry Fine Wine

Finding just the wine to pair with turkey has sent many a sommelier on a world-wide adventure. We found ours in the unlikeliest of spots–Australia. Let’s face it. Turkeys aren’t exactly indigenous to Oz. Then again, great wines are. And this blend is no exception. Medium to full bodied, with a multi-layered, lush berry taste, […]

Fall in a Bottle

Here’s a case of a wine that had us at “hello”—or rather “shalom.” From the first whiff, we were seduced by its vanilla bouquet and deep red color. And as we sipped happily, we wondered whether it would live up to its first impression and stand up to a Middle Eastern vegetable casserole or a […]

A Lush Israeli Vintage

Like today’s Hollywood starlets, 98 percent of wines don’t age. They are trotted out while they’re young—very young. They know how to make quite the first impression, they create a lot of buzz, and they hardly have staying power. But there are exceptions. And we were lucky enough to find one—Gush Etzion’s 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon. Call it the Diane Lane of wines.

Kiwi for Kiddush

By Robert Eigen

New Zealand may be known for its kiwi—the exotic bird, not the fruit—but it also boasts some of the best vineyards in the world. Who knew? In truth, there’s been wine production taking place Down Under since the ‘70s. But whereas the Australians focused on making quantity, New Zealanders concentrated […]
