A Lush Israeli Vintage

Like today’s Hollywood starlets, 98 percent of wines don’t age. They are trotted out while they’re young—very young. They know how to make quite the first impression, they create a lot of buzz, and they hardly have staying power. But there are exceptions. And we were lucky enough to find one—Gush Etzion’s 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon. Call it the Diane Lane of wines. We were introduced to this medium-bodied Israeli last year. It was earthy with red cherry flavors a hint of dark chocolate. And we had a feeling this Bordeaux-style vintage would only get better with time. How did we know? It had that same tightness or understated quality you get from biting into a fruit that isn’t quite ripe. A year later, it’s at its peak—robust, with even darker bursts of cherry with plum and a slight smokiness. In other words: Ooh, la, la. Like most Israeli wines, it has “terroir,” or what we in the wine biz refer to as a sense of place. It pairs beautifully with dishes from the region, such as lamb, veal or beef flavored with Middle Eastern spices. And the best part? It’s a steal at $15.99 a bottle. Here’s a rare chance to sample a wine that’s truly evolved and at an amazing price. We fell so head over heels in love with this limited-edition vintage, we bought whatever bottles were left. And we scored quite the deal. Enter code BFruit for even more of a break.
