Set a Festive Mood

By Michele Safra

Rosh Hashana is a time of fresh starts—the Chasidim say it’s the day Hashem literally restores his kingship here on Earth. In that spirit, we combed the city in search of truly regal finds. (What better excuse to shop for great, new tabletop?) Drawing on the rich hues of pomegranates, apples and honey—and keeping in mind our beloved Shofar—here are our suggestions to make your Rosh Hashanah table fit for the King.

  1. A red tablecloth makes a dramatic statement and echoes the colors of the season’s fruit. The Beauville Topkapi Garnet tablecloth has a subtle vine design that says, “It’s time to turn over a new leaf.” And it’s on sale now ($52.50 for a 67” square; $5 for the napkins at gracioushome.com).beauville_topkapi_cloth.jpg
  2. Add the Midas touch. If you have gold-rimmed plates, you’re in luck. If not, check out this combo of Marrakech red and gold plates at crateandbarrel.com (salad, $12.95; dinner, $14.95, charger, $18.95), which seem royalty-worthy without the hefty price tag.marakech_gold_plates.jpg
  3. For a taste of honey—without the calories—these tortoise tumblers make quite the splash ($24 for small, $32 for tall at westelm.com).tortoise_tumblers.jpg
  4. Spice up the table with hints of gold and red. (La Fenice Murano Glass large red oval bubble salt-and-pepper shakers, $98 each; Glass Act shakers, $40 at barneys.com).la_fenice_glasse.jpg
  5. Blow your horn, or rather infuse your table with it. And by that, we don’t mean literally throw a shofar on your table. A honey dish made out of horn plays on the theme in a subtler way (sterling silver and horn dish with spoon, $140, William-wayne.com).horn_honey_dish.jpg
  6. Ring in the new with novel, honey-toned napkin rings (Daisy Hill chunk napkin rings, $22 each, barneys.com).napkin_ring.jpg
  7. Paint the roses red. Sounds like the Queen’s orders from “Alice in Wonderland,” but there’s no better color for this Chag. These roses come direct from Israel and make a great gift as well ($75 for four dozen, israelrose.com).roses.jpg
